Westmoreland Coal Company collection of the Stonega Coke and Coal Company papers, 1915-1957.

The collection contains an incomplete run of 32 annual reports of the operating departments of the company and ca. 280 glass plate negatives of maps, charts, and safety warnings pertaining to the company. The reports contain summaries and statistics concerning construction, output, technological change, wage scales, wholesale prices, labor recruitment, accidents and other medical concerns, and legal cases. Photographs, maps, plans, and drawings of buildings and equipment are included in the volumes. The collection also contains annual reports for the Crab Orchard Improvement Company, Raleigh County, W. Va., whose coal was marketed by Stonega. Dr. John S. Wentz was a prominent officer of the company during much of its existence.

The Stonega Coke & Coal Company was a typical large southern Appalacian bituminous coal producer with mines in Virginia and West Virginia.
